Position Summary:

The Safety Specialist (Hazardous Work Protection) is responsible for ensuring that hazardous work activities are conducted in compliance with applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and best practices. This role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of programs focused on protecting workers from chemical, physical, biological, and radiological hazards. The Safety Specialist works closely with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to provide technical guidance, conduct risk assessments, and implement control strategies. The specialist will Promote worksite or product safety by applying knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, chemistry, psychology, and industrial health and safety laws.

Health and Safety Engineers, Except Mining Safety Engineers and Inspectors, and industrial product safety engineers are the ideal candidate. This role is contingent upon contract award.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Monitor and support hazardous work operations to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other regulatory standards.





  • Perform hazard assessments and job safety analyses (JSAs) for high-risk tasks involving confined space entry, hot work, lockout/tagout, hazardous chemicals, or other elevated hazards.





  • Review and enforce implementation of appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE).





  • Conduct routine inspections and audits of hazardous work areas to identify unsafe conditions or practices and recommend corrective actions.





  • Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and development of corrective/preventive action plans.





  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of safety training for workers, supervisors, and contractors engaged in hazardous operations.





  • Develop and maintain documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety plans, and exposure control programs.





  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning and drills specific to hazardous materials or high-risk work activities.





  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental compliance) to ensure an integrated approach to risk management.




Minimum Qualifications:




  • Bachelor's Degree





  • At least 2 years of experience in occupational safety or hazardous work environments (e.g., construction, manufacturing, laboratories, utilities, or energy sectors).





  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910/1926), hazard communication, and control strategies for chemical and physical hazards.





  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.





  • Ability to interpret technical documents, safety data sheets (SDS), and regulatory codes.





  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and safety management systems.




Preferred Qualifications:




  • Bachelor's Degree (in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.





  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification or equivalent safety training.





  • Experience supporting work involving confined space, hazardous materials handling, or high-hazard maintenance operations.





  • Familiarity with safety programs in federal, defense, nuclear, or research environments.





  • Working knowledge of behavior-based safety (BBS), ISO 45001, or other performance-based safety systems.





  • Ability to influence safety culture and lead cross-functional safety initiatives.




Work Environment & Physical Requirements:




  • Work may be conducted in a mix of industrial, laboratory, construction, and field settings.





  • Exposure to hazardous materials, high temperatures, noise, or confined spaces may occur.





  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirators or full protective suits as needed.





  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 40 lbs during field inspections or emergency response.
