The Principal Respiratory Therapist / Polysomnography Technologist reports directly to the Neurodiagnostic Services Supervisors and is responsible for performing a wide range of routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures for hospital inpatients and outpatients of all ages. These procedures include, but are not limited to: in-lab polysomnograms (diagnostic and PAP titrations), tracheostomy and ventilator studies, home sleep apnea testing, staging and scoring, oxygen administration, CO monitoring, PAP mask fittings, and patient education.
This position serves as a liaison for interdepartmental communication, reporting concerns to the Neurodiagnostic Supervisor, and promoting a collaborative and positive work environment. The Principal Technologist leads training and development initiatives for both new and experienced staff and facilitates daily team huddles, coordinates patient care, and ensures equitable distribution of workloads in the shared lab space.
In addition, the Principal Technologist monitors and ensures the technical quality of studies conducted by all classifications of Polysomnography Technologists and Respiratory Therapists. They are also responsible for maintaining, organizing, and tracking inventory and supplies, and for ensuring that the lab environment complies with Joint Commission standards.
Additional responsibilities include performing regular audits of various logbooks, supporting timely assignment and tracking of study reads by Sleep Medicine physicians, and assisting with research, quality assurance, and accreditation activities as directed by the Sleep Disorders Lab Medical Director.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position
- California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- Must have and maintain current Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT)
- Licensed in the State of California as a Polysomnography Technologist, or be able to acquire it within 90 days of hire
- American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist in an AASM-accredited Sleep Disorders Center
- Demonstrate hands-on ("roll up sleeves") approach as The Principal Respiratory Therapist/Polysomnography Technologist
- Problem-solving skills to independently define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve problems; create viable solutions and take the action necessary to implement them; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
- Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record, and maintain documentation that complies with all pertinent laws, regulations, and HIPAA guidelines regarding confidentiality, maintenance, and provision to others
- Working knowledge of medical terminology to accurately transcribe physicians' orders
- Working knowledge of departmental and system policies and procedures.
- Ability to efficiently use the computer system to retrieve pertinent patient information through the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Digital filing skills to maintain logs and files of information in alphabetical, chronological, and/or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable
