We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director I Budgets and Operations on our Scientific Publications team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This position will provide finance, planning, and administrative leadership to JAMA Network
Editorial leadership to ensure smooth and efficient operations. Key functions include oversight and
management of financial planning and reporting, vendor and consulting
contracts, procurement, staffing and human resources, organizational policy
development and compliance, JAMA Network Editorial Board and community engagement,
program and project management, and key event management and planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial & Business Operations

  • Provide oversight for the JAMA Network's annual editorial financial planning in collaboration with senior leadership and finance partners.
  • Lead comprehensive financial operations including capital planning, salary, budgeting, forecasting, and business unit-level reporting.
  • Deliver data-driven financial analyses that identify trends, surface risk and opportunity areas, and inform strategic decisions.
  • Serve as a liaison between JAMA and cross-functional partners such as legal, HR, IT, finance, procurement, and corporate services.
  • Serve as the principal liaison to AMA Human Resources for all staffing operations-including talent acquisition, performance management, salary planning, and workforce equity reviews.
  • Partner with the VP Planning and Operations and Editor-in-Chief and HR to implement performance management frameworks and professional development strategies aligned with organizational values and equity objectives.
  • Oversee contracts, consultant editors, invoicing, vendors, and purchasing to support both current operational needs and growth initiatives-mitigating financial risks and optimizing resource allocation across the network.
  • Establish procedures and standards; implement new office policies as needed.

Program Management and Event Management

  • In collaboration with the Editor and Chief and VP Planning/Operations, the plan and execute high-impact events, including the JAMA and JAMA Network Editorial Board Meetings, JAMA Summit, and global roadshow events.
  • Define event strategy for the global roadshow program by identifying target audiences, establishing clear goals and measurable outcomes, selecting optimal timing and venues, and ensuring fiscal discipline through proactive budget management and optimal attendee experience.
  • Develop and direct the operational workflow tied to the implementation of editorial programs across the JAMA Network.
  • Responsibilities may include organizing applications and application review, working with legal to develop notification letters/agreements/forms, developing orientation and onboarding plans, arranging payment, and developing improvement surveys.
  • Lead the planning and execution of community-building events.

Internal & External Collaboration

  • Lead the development, execution, and continuous improvement of engagement strategies for a network of editors, editorial board members, and Fellows across the JAMA Network aimed at fostering a sense of community, strengthening relationships with the organization, and empowering members to serve as ambassadors for the brand and its mission.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the editorial network, ensuring timely, relevant, and two-way communication and facilitating regular touchpoints (e.g., newsletters, webinars, town halls) to keep members informed, connected, and inspired.

People Management

  • Provide management oversight for staff including hiring, training, and ensuring compliance
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employees performance and fostering a collaborative team environment
  • Responsible for developing staff's knowledge and skills to support career development

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor's Degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  2. Minimum 10+ years experience in administrative and operations management, event/project management, or finance required.
  3. Minimum 3+ years experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent.
  4. Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills required; including experience working with top leaders in the healthcare industry and editorial and publishing environments.
  5. Demonstrated experience with budgeting and resource planning; knowledge of fundamental accounting principles.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects within a complex and rapidly changing setting required.
  7. Proven ability to handle and prepare sensitive information required.
  8. Polished analytical skills and strong problem-solving ability required.
  9. Strong planning, organizing, prioritizing and negotiation capabilities required.
  10. Some travel required.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $126,378 - $170,825. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration, geographical location, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
