Job Overview

The Specialist, Design Engineer generates 3D models of concept designs, incorporating structural and mechanical elements as needed. They work under the supervision of the Engineering Manager to ensure all safety and production requirements are met. The Specialist collaborates closely with Production and Fabrication teams to deliver technical drawings and support the successful execution of each project. They provide innovative design solutions for all Macy's Branded Events, including pre- and post-production of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade floats, ancillary scenic props and elements for the annual Flower Show, 4th of July Fireworks, and various holiday activations.

What You Will Do



  • Design and engineer elements for Macy's Branded Entertainment (MBE) events.
  • Partner with Branded Entertainment teams during concept development.
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager to define project scope and develop fabrication plans.
  • Create fully detailed 3D models to anticipate and resolve assembly challenges.
  • Perform structural and weight calculations to ensure safety and stability.
  • Apply engineering and physics principles to develop effective design solutions.
  • Determine material requirements and perform necessary calculations for each project.
  • Produce detailed technical drawings for fabrication.
  • Communicate with fabricators to ensure accurate and successful builds.
  • Generate files for CNC manufacturing.
  • Manage projects through completion, ensuring timelines are met and designs are executed as intended.
  • Maintain organized records of drawings, models, and designs within the existing file system.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.



Skills You Will Need

3D CAD Modeling - Proficient in SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor with the ability to generate detailed, accurate 3D models for complex assemblies.
Structural & Mechanical Design - Applies engineering and physics principles to design safe, stable, and innovative event elements, including weight and structural calculations.
Technical Drawing Production - Skilled in producing precise technical drawings for fabrication, ensuring manufacturability and clarity for build teams.
CNC & Digital Fabrication - Knowledgeable in CNC manufacturing processes and file preparation; familiarity with 3D printing techniques.
Material Selection & Construction Methods - Experienced in working with steel, aluminum, and wood; understands weldments, bolted connections, and modular assemblies.
Project Management & Execution - Follows projects from concept through fabrication, managing scope, timelines, and production requirements.
Creative Problem Solving - Capable of resolving complex build challenges and proposing solutions that preserve the creative vision.
Cross-Functional Partnership - Collaborates with Production Managers, Creative teams, and Fabrication to support event success across concept, design, and execution phases.
Professional Communication - Communicates clearly and professionally; able to present ideas, ask questions, and contribute to collaborative problem solving.
Adaptability & Growth Mindset - Open to feedback, eager to learn new skills, and flexible in adapting to evolving design and production needs.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs. Able to work some weekends and holidays as required, including Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day.
