Job Title: Operations Specialist

Position Summary
- The Laboratory Assistant will help support the daily operations of the Cell Therapy Process Development Lab, reporting directly to the Laboratory Operations Manager. This position is ideal for someone with an interest in cell and gene therapy, looking to gain hands-on experience in a biotech environment. The Laboratory Assistant will assist with a variety of laboratory tasks, including sample handling, materials management, equipment maintenance, and documentation, to ensure the smooth operation of the lab.
Responsibilities
- Receive, process, and manage biological samples, including fresh, frozen, and cryopreserved cell lines; ensure proper labeling, documentation, and storage in accordance with established protocols
- Maintain and monitor cryogenic storage systems (e.g., liquid nitrogen dewars) by performing regular inventory checks, refilling as necessary, and logging all activity accurately to ensure sample integrity
- Prepare samples for internal assays or external shipments, including coordination with external vendors or collaborators, generating packing lists, and ensuring compliance with all shipping regulations
- Clean and disinfect laboratory workspaces (biosafety cabinets, benchtops, incubators, and shared equipment) before and after use to maintain a sterile and organized lab environment
- Stock and organize laboratory supplies and reagents, including unpacking deliveries, updating inventory logs, rotating stock, and reporting low inventory levels to ensure uninterrupted operations
- Set up equipment and materials for experiments, including calibrating pipettes, prepping cultureware, labeling tubes/plates, and assembling tools per SOPs or scientist instructions
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and upkeep on commonly used instruments such as biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, incubators, water baths, and refrigerators; report malfunctions and coordinate service calls as needed
- Support data entry and record-keeping activities by entering sample metadata, experimental details, and equipment maintenance logs into electronic systems such as LIMS or Excel trackers
- Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date sample inventory, including creating and managing digital records, barcoding vials, and tracking sample movement between departments
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including Supply Chain, Facilities, and EH&S to ensure smooth day-to-day lab operations and timely resolution of facility or safety concerns
- Participate in safety and compliance initiatives, such as daily walkthroughs, equipment safety checks, and assisting in laboratory audits or inspections
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols and standard operating procedures, including the use of appropriate PPE, biosafety practices, and proper disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste
- Provide general support to scientists and laboratory staff, including ad hoc tasks such as running errands for urgent materials, printing labels, assembling documentation packets, or assisting with lab moves and reorganization
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline preferred.
- Previous lab experience or internship in a biotech/pharma lab setting is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to follow written SOPs and verbal instructions accurately.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment.
- Proficient in basic computer applications such as Excel, Word, and inventory management systems.
