Senior Computational Software Development Engineer

Lam Research
United States, Massachusetts, Waltham
Jul 01, 2025
The Group You'll Be A Part Of

The Office of the CTO is where innovation takes center stage. We inspire our global technical community to take on grand challenges, understand emerging trends, identify the critical inflections, and drive our sustainability, Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices that will define the next generation of semiconductors and continued impact.

The Impact You'll Make

Excited to create new ways to computationally model physical phenomena-and then code them all the way from prototype to production? If so, we have opportunities for passionate software engineers with strong backgrounds in physical modeling and simulation. As a key member of our modeling team, you will design and implement algorithms for simulating the physical phenomena that play a crucial role in the fabrication of cutting-edge nanoscale semiconductor devices. Your work will have a direct impact on how our partners and customers design and create highly complex 3D structures for today's semiconductor devices. This is a hands-on software engineering position requiring expertise in numerical methods, physical modeling, and proficiency in C++. You will be able to learn and grow as part of the open and collaborative team that builds the modeling capabilities of the well-established SEMulator3D software product. SEMulator3D is now part of the new Semiverse Solutions initiative to create a software ecosystem to tackle the semiconductor industry's greatest challenges.

As a Senior Computational Software Development Engineer at Lam, you will be at the forefront of innovation-designing, developing, troubleshooting, and debugging software programs.Your role is pivotal in developing software tools that support design, infrastructure, and technology platforms. Your expertise will determine hardware compatibility and influence design, ensuring seamless integration between software and hardware. In this role, you'll make an impact across Lam's entire product portfolio, working within our centralized software engineering team and collaborating with some of the brightest minds in the industry.

What You'll Do
  • Explore new approaches to model phenomena in semiconductor fabrication.
  • Design efficient algorithms to simulate these physical phenomena.
  • Implement the algorithms using advanced data structures, such as octrees, for scalability.
  • Optimize the algorithms for speed and robustness through profiling and parallelization.
  • Produce high-quality software that is well-documented, tested, and maintainable.
  • Collaborate with the applications team to understand and troubleshoot customer needs.
Who We're Looking For
  • PhD orMaster's degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or computer science, with a focus on 3D modeling, simulation, scientific computing, or semiconductors.
  • Familiarity with molecular dynamics,DFT or other modeling methods for atomistic phenomena.
  • Direct experience implementing 3D physical simulation algorithms, such as particle-based methods, finite volume or finite element.
  • Strong background in modern C++ programming and software engineering.
  • Strong fundamental math skills, including linear algebra, calculus, and geometry.
  • Team player who thrives in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts.

This position is based in Waltham, MA, and requires working from the office at least three days per week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Broad background in numerical methods and scientific computing.
  • Professional software engineering experience, preferably in developing 3D modeling software products.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design, agile methodologies, and cross-platform development for Windows and Linux.
  • Experience with C++ libraries such as boost, STL, or Qt; Python coding skills.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor process technology, design, and manufacturing.
