Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for the Brain Health Institute within Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences ( RBHS).

The primary purpose of the Laboratory Assistant is to conduct behavioral experiments in Gerbils to study the influence of early and adult auditory and visual sensory experience on brain development and associative learning and adeno-associated virus gene therapy interventions to prevent hearing, visual, and vestibular dysfunction. interventions to prevent hearing and vestibular dysfunction.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Maintains animal colony, carry out animal husbandry and post-operative care, maintain records, and carries out auditory, visual, and vestibular physiological recordings.
  • Trains animals and run behavioral experiments to assess associative and perceptual learning in Gerbils.
  • Carries out post-experiment processing of brain tissue (histology).
  • Assists with microscopy and anatomical analysis of processed brain tissue.
  • Performs auditory (e.g., earplugging) and visual (e.g., eye opening) manipulations in neonates (noise/light exposure) and adults (noise exposure/drug exposure).s
  • Maintains accurate records of experimentation and research, assist with data entry and analysis.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • One (1) year of previous laboratory and/or animal handling experience.

  • Basic computer skills required (data entry/organization).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a relevant scientific field: psychology, biology, neuroscience, or other related field.

Sitting, standing, walking, may need to lift small packages/animal carriers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
BSL1 Scientific research laboratory. Universal safety precautions are mandatory.
Special Conditions
  • This is a full-time laboratory assistant position for 40 hours per week (5, 8-hour days) which may include working on weekends when training animal cohorts.
