Summary:
- To perform varied maintenance and construction work for flood protection and raw water distribution properties and facilities and on other Valley Water lands; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Positions assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit perform a variety of work in support of the Valley Water's vegetation management programs, including vegetation control work, integrated vegetation management, arboriculture, native plant revegetation projects, invasive plant management projects, and biotechnical erosion control work.
Maintenance Worker I
- Receives immediate supervision. Employees within this class work in the presence of their supervisor or in a situation of close control and easy reference. Work assignments are given with explicit instructions or are so routine that few, if any, deviations from established practices are made without checking with the supervisor.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Construct, maintain, and repair flood protection and raw water facilities and on other Valley Water lands; patch cracks; build and remove small dams and Client riprap; perform concrete work; break and remove rubble, place forms and install reinforcements; mix, pour, and finish cement.
- Assist in trash and debris removal and graffiti abatement at locations such as work sites, on waterways and raw water facilities, including and encampment generated trash, debris and hazardous pollutants; ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials as established by Valley Water guidelines.
- Supports the loading of sediment and the cleaning of groundwater recharge and sludge ponds; Counts truck loads; completes truck tags; and makes sure operators are properly loading trucks and perform traffic control.
- Construct, repair, and maintain dams, waterways, roads, and other raw water distribution and flood protection facilities including clearing brush, prune vegetation, perform tree removals including standing or downed trees.
- Assist in performing preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, and other raw water distribution facilities; assist Valley Water staff in various mechanical, electrical, carpentry, welding and painting work requiring the use of pumps generators and small equipment.
- Perform traffic control functions; set up traffic warning devices and barricades; direct traffic around work sites.
- Check job site for potential hazards; determine precautions for equipment operation; operate power tools and light equipment and perform assignment in compliance with safety regulations.
- Haul equipment to and from job sites; inspect equipment, make operating adjustments, and perform minor preventive maintenance and repair.
- Maintain electronic records of work performed.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in a timely manner.
- Construct and repair fences.
- Move and check grates and trash racks.
- Remove blockages and perform sediment removal and bank repair in activities in creeks; record appropriate accomplishments dependent on work activity
- Perform earthwork activities including grading, excavation and placement of fill using equipment, tools and by hand.
For Positions Assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit:
- Participate in a variety of native plant revegetation projects, invasive plant management projects, vegetation control projects, tree removals, biotechnical erosion control projects, and overall integrated vegetation management work on Valley Water properties.
- Clear brush, weeds, trash, debris and hazardous pollutants from worksites, canals, ponds, creeks, reservoirs, pipelines, water treatment plants, dams, and other open areas; prune vegetation, perform tree removals including standing or downed trees.
- Prepare soil and install native plant revegetation per established plans; maintain mitigation areas to achieve success criteria and meet monitoring requirements.
- Install, adjust, and repair irrigation systems, including heads, lines, and controllers.
- Operate a variety of small power tools and light equipment, including spray equipment, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, pole saw, hydro seeder, small trenchers, loader, compactors, water trucks, forklift, straw mulcher, auger, sandbag machine, and chipper; clean, adjust, and perform minor maintenance on light equipment to ensure proper operating condition.
- Mix and apply herbicides, and calibration of spray equipment to control the growth of vegetation on and around flood protection and raw water distribution facilities and rights of way.
- Build or remove browse cages, or other devices to keep wildlife from damaging native plant revegetation sites. Build phytosanitary benches, fences, irrigation, etc. in support of native plant holding facilities.
- Participate in the Valley Water's sandbag program when needed.
- Perform calculations of required work materials; document daily application of chemical use; photo documentation of work, complete work order dailies, checklists, surveys, forms, and time data entries. Maintain electronic records of work performed.
Required Education:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Required Experience:
- Two (2) years of construction or field maintenance experience.
Experience for Positions Assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit:
- Two (2) years of experience performing landscaping activities for commercial, public, and/or institutional properties.
License or Certificate:
- Must have a satisfactory driving record, a valid California driver's license and be able to obtain a valid Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
