Job Description:
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have minimum 4 years of journeyman level experience working on industrial HVAC systems.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skills to repair, modify, maintain, service, perform preventive maintenance of air conditioning units, plants and systems, and related equipment in specific and/or critical areas. The HVAC Mechanic shall plan, Client out, and install critical climatic units, insuring balance and readout. The HVAC Mechanic shall alter, or substitute required components to meet conditions in different areas to provide comfort to patients and staff.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets to overhaul and maintain a variety of refrigerating units such as testing calibrations on critical units, freezers, hot and cold food carts, individual heat pumps, water chilling systems, and units interlocked with solar systems.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets and knowledge to work independently to check elements such as those which control internal pressures, temperatures of cooling units and running time of various machines, to visually leak-check and perform an audible examination of equipment, work with others in installing heavy roof-mounted units, ceiling installation, and/or where problems arise, and incumbent's knowledge is needed.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall respond immediately to service vital, malfunctioning equipment in all areas, and work with or trains others in the operation of equipment.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall be familiar with proper inspection and maintenance practices in the trade, using manufacturers' information, literature and instructions, or trade guides and maintenance manuals.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets and knowledge to fabricate duct work, using proper tools and equipment common to the air conditioning/refrigeration trade, to determine from own knowledge or by referring to manufacturers' literature, the pipe sizes to be used in specific applications, to select tools, equipment, instruments and/or materials to be used in completing assigned tasks.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration, refrigeration cycling and heat transfer laws and the ability to apply this knowledge to a variety of domestic, commercial, and industrial equipment and systems.
- The HVAC Mechanic shall have the knowledge of control elements, high and low side pressure, temperature of cooling units, temperatures of the liquid and suction lines and running time of various mechanisms for the different systems to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and reduce the downtime of the equipment.
- The HVAC mechanic shall have the knowledge and skill in applying test procedures and equipment common to the A/C refrigeration trade and ability to locate leaks and other problems by visual and/or audible examination of the equipment.
- The HVAC mechanic shall have the knowledge and skill to use electronic meters and/or thermometers to determine and correct temperatures and air changes and to balance heat loads.
- The HVAC mechanic shall be proficient in reading, interpreting, and applying complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, rough sketches, manufacturers' instructions and literature, and other written guides and work instructions and readily understand oral instructions and equipment specifications and requirements.
- The HVAC mechanic shall be responsible for completing work orders as assigned or on any emergency basis, and for maintaining required records, accounting for time/materials and cost of repairs
Other Qualifications .
- Basic Literacy : Accepted trade and shop knowledge expected of a full performance journeyman, including the knowledge and ability to read and write and to use simple shop or trade mathematics.
- Safety: Knowledge of local and national safety codes and the knowledge and ability to conduct work in accordance with established regulations, including Medical Center regulations, with respect to own and co-workers' safety. Knowledge and ability to always adhere to proper safety practices, and to encourage proper safety practices among fellow employees.
- Operate vehicles: Knowledge and ability to operate motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, and motor scooters. (Must have and maintain a current state driver license).
- Responsibility: The contracted personnel work under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Shop supervisor. Supervision is of a general nature usually via written, electronic, or verbal work orders, standing assignments and oral instructions. Work is reviewed for efficiency, effectiveness, quality and compliance with instructions and trade practices. The contracted personnel is expected to make independent judgment and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted trade and shop practices and procedures, and to resolve most problems independently, and refer more difficult problems to supervisor for advice and assistance.
- PHYSICAL EFFORT: Repairs and installations may be made from ladders, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in uncomfortable positions, and to pull, push, reach over the shoulder, and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Contracted personnel must have rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perceptions, and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Glasses are permitted.
- WORK CONDITIONS: The work is performed both inside and outside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, or chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/of uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical (equipment) closets. Repairs and installations might be required in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy on scaffolding and in close quarters such as manholes and attics.
- TRAVEL. Travels outside of assigned project location is not anticipated. Travel performed for personal convenience and daily travel to and from work at the place of performance will not be reimbursed. The Government will not be responsible for any relocation expenses associated with moving contracted personnel or replacement of personnel.
- CUSTOMER SERVICE. Meets the needs of customers both internally and externally while supporting the VA mission. Consistently communicates and treats customers (investigators, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflicts and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- SECURITY. Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provision of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statues and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
