Your role at Baxter

Baxter is on a mission to modernize our global manufacturing locations through the implementation of advanced automation and Industry 4.0 tools. These tools are designed to improve our operations' productivity goals and enable manufacturing sites to be smarter and leaner.

Our team is seeking a Senior Engineer to manage projects and oversee the implementation of advanced machine vision solutions for pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. The ideal candidate will have a background in a combination of vision system design, machine/computer vision software, cloud connectivity and services, industrial automation controllers (i.e., PLCs) and programming. Candidates should have experience working in a regulated manufacturing setting and working on cross functional teams. In this complex and rapidly evolving field, it's important that the candidate has a proven track record of being highly independent and has a demonstrated ability to work through technical blocks and challenges with minimal guidance.

Your team

Advanced Engineering & Innovation (AE&I) department is a team of inquisitive individuals who embrace a collaborative environment to tackle sophisticated challenges that meet the needs of our patients. We often need to change directions and respond to issues to avoid disruptions in our fast-paced manufacturing environment. Together, we build and maintain a positive work environment.

When you join us, you will work with a team of committed individuals who trust each other to deliver on the tasks at hand. We support innovation and out-of-the-box thinking balanced with collaboration across functions and other teams. Our leadership understands the need for continuous education and provides opportunities for further development.

What you'll be doing
  • As a product owner, partner with a team of cross-functional technical experts (e.g., software, machine learning, computer vision, mechanical and controls engineers, network administrators, and cloud computing architects) to develop and implement AI-based computer vision systems for complex industrial automation use cases.
  • Support cross-functional teams at a Global scale to deploy advanced technologies at our manufacturing facilities.
  • Effectively manage project deliverables and commitments.
  • Proactively identify equipment/automation issues and implement improvements to improve system reliability, performance, and user experience.
  • Support training workshops with regional and site manufacturing engineers on AE&I technologies with the goals of helping participants understand the intricacies of the technology and how to implement and sustain it themselves.
  • Generate technical documentation in support of project deliverables and requirements, such as protocols, reports, user requirements specifications (URS), design specifications, validation test cases, manuals, work instructions, etc.
  • In this position you will learn to effectively use the command line in Linux (i.e., terminal) to provision hardware, interact with various command lines tools (e.g., Docker, AWS CLI, etc.), collect diagnostic information, and perform troubleshooting.
  • Work with CoaXPress, GigE, and USB3 Vision industrial cameras, lenses, optics, and lighting to optimize vision system image quality on the manufacturing floor, including in cleanroom environments.
  • Provision AI Vision system PCs with all the required software, configure for use, and troubleshoot and debug hardware and software issues that may arise during commissioning and after validation.
  • Collaberate and coordinate with Global and Local Quality teams to validate vision system systems for use in production.
  • Partner with quality assurance, regulatory affairs, automation engineers, and production teams to enhance vision system performance, manufacturing efficiency, and compliance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on some combination of industrial computer vision technologies including:
    • Cameras/Sensors
    • Lighting
    • Lensing and optics
    • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) (e.g., Allen-Bradley & Siemens)
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies in AI-based defect detection, hyperspectral imaging, and 3D vision for pharmaceutical and medical device
  • Support up to 30% business travel to global manufacturing locations.
What you'll bring
  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or related technical field.
  • Advanced computer literacy/proficiency is required - members of this team go well beyond basic word processing and generalized PC use. An ideal candidate will be able to successfully demonstrate a passion for learning software, coding, and related IT skills.
  • Business Travel: Support projects across Baxter's Global manufacturing network. Sites and extended team members are distributed across different regions (UCAN, LATAM, EMEA, and APAC). Travel is often required for project scoping, system installation & commissioning, training local resources, etc.
  • Experience with computer vision hardware (i.e., industrial cameras, lenses, optics, and lighting).
  • Experience engaging and effectively managing outside contractors, vendors, suppliers, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills for both software and hardware in machine vision applications.
  • Expertise in industrial vision system hardware and industrial controllers.
  • Experience in integrating machine vision systems with external systems (e.g., SCADA & MES systems, cloud endpoints (e.g., AWS S3), and PLCs (e.g., Allen Bradley and Siemens)).
  • Familiarity with deep learning models (CNNs, transformers) for defect classification and anomaly detection.
  • Experience selecting edge computing hardware, assembling components, and provisioning hardware with a Linux OS, installing drivers and software from a command line interface.
