Overview

AVIAN is seeking a Junior Strategic Communication Specialist to support a Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) government customer. This position is contingent upon award. You will work as part of a strategic communication team, with a primary focus on developing high-impact written content that supports both internal and external communication objectives. The ideal candidate excels at crafting clear, concise, and compelling narratives tailored to a variety of audiences and formats, including articles, speeches, media responses, and strategic communication plans. Strong storytelling ability, editorial precision, and attention to detail are essential, along with the ability to integrate written content into broader multimedia and communication efforts.

You will join AVIAN's cadre of creative professionals who specialize in strategic communication, graphic design, marketing, multimedia production and more. Our creative team supports each other through constructive peer reviews, shares professional resources and regularly gathers for continuing education sessions.

This is a hybrid position with on-site responsibilities at NAS Patuxent River.



Responsibilities

    Serve as key member of strategic communications team, with strong emphasis on writing and content development for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Research, draft, edit and produce a wide range of high-quality written materials in support of strategic communications objectives, in accordance with AP style and government guidelines. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Articles, feature stories and briefs
    • Press releases and key messages
    • Speechwriting and talking points for leadership
    • Award Narratives
    • Strategic and crisis communication plans
    • Responses to media queries
  • Collaborate closely with public affairs officers, military squadrons, industry partners, NAVAIR IPTs and other agencies to develop clear, coordinated messaging that supports mission goals.
  • Contribute to public relations activities including media training, leadership interview preparation, protocol support, and event planning to ensure cohesive messaging and strong public representation.
  • Provide editorial and content guidance in the development of graphic and multimedia materials, including infographics, publication design, illustrations, and branding assets using Adobe Creative Suite and other design tools.
  • Demonstrate strong editorial judgment and the ability to adapt messaging across multiple channels and audiences while maintaining consistency with government guidelines and strategic objectives.
  • Candidate must be a flexible team player and self-starter possessing excellent organizational skills. The ideal individual will have the ability to function in a team environment or autonomously, manage competing priorities, and be able to meet critical project schedules.
  • Selected candidate must be able to handle several tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to travel occasionally is also required.


Qualifications

Education: BA/BS degree plus one to three years of combined experience in the communications field.

Desired Experience: 2 years of experience supporting naval aviation programs and developing video projects

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • This position has an onsite requirement in Patuxent River, MD and is not eligible for fully remote candidates.
  • Salary range: $70,000-$85,000 (The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.)
