Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose |
The Assistant Dean of Career Services serves as the senior employee and supervisor of the Career Services Office (
CSO). The Assistant Dean is responsible for leading the CSO's efforts to maintain and strengthen employment networks to provide students and alumni with a wide breadth of quality internship and post-graduate job opportunities; overseeing the data collection for career outcomes data required by the American Bar Association, creating innovative career development programming and activities for Juris Doctor, Master of Science in Law,
LLM, Master of Public Policy, and Master of Public Administration students and alumni at the law school; developing department strategic vision and managing planning for the unit; managing the
CSO office and supervising staff and work study students; and coordinating
CSO messaging and professional development activities with Externships, Alumni Relations, Admissions, Student Services, and other departments on campus, as well as student organizations and faculty. |
Essential Functions |
Planning and Management:
- Develops and manages the strategic goals, staff, and annual plan, including budget, for the Career Services office.
- Develops innovative programming and recruitment activities.
- Creates and continuously refines metrics and tracks performance results for key department activities, especially job outcomes for JD graduates.
- Applies for grants and funding when appropriate.
Employer Outreach:
- Develops and oversees innovative, active, and strategic employer outreach plan in specific legal specialties and diverse geographic regions using a variety of strategies.
- Oversees plans to increase employer recruitment of students both on and off campus through fairs, job postings, and other activities.
- Develops strong personal relationships with employers both in California as well as across the country that result in hiring opportunities for McGeorge students and alumni.
- Handles all concerns from or about employers. Is the first point of contact in the CSO regarding any issues related to employers.
- Sits on professional committees, including BALRA and NALP committees, the Bay Area Consortium, and others to optimize programming and networking opportunities for our students and to stay abreast of new employment trends and career services best practices.
External Relations:
- Authors career and networking-related articles for national publications to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the field and raise McGeorge's profile among law schools, private and public employers, and career services professionals.
- Develops and gives seminars, such as Mandatory Continuing Legal Education presentations to attorneys regionally and nationally to enhance relationships between the CSO and the legal community.
- Represents McGeorge through service on national, state, and regional networks and committees, including NALP Committees, California Pro Bono network, and Bay Area Law School Consortium.
- Handles all accreditation and audit responsibilities, including reporting to WASC and the ABA, and responding to internal and ABA audits.
Communications:
- Oversees detailed communication plan for department with the goal of educating and engaging students, alumni, faculty, and prospective and current employers about the law school, its students, and CSO services, programs, and activities.
- Ensures timely, reliable and high-quality communications through newsletters, blog, website, social media, printed materials, and email.
Employment Initiative and ERSS:
- Supervises the collection and maintenance of department and job-placement statistics to ensure compliance with requirements set by the ABA, NALP, and US News, including mandatory tracking and reporting of each JD graduate through ten months post-graduation.
- Conducts a thorough internal audit before filling ABA statistics annually. Reports directly to the Dean on employment statistics and employment initiative strategies.
- Develops plan for support of recent graduates of JD and other graduate programs within McGeorge. Coordinates and disseminates information related to employment trends for new graduates.
- Creates and leads projects aimed at increasing employment opportunities for recent graduates.
Faculty and Alumni Board Association:
- Serves as liaison between the CSO and faculty.
- Attends meetings and presents on employment initiatives, major programming, legal market trends, CSO activities, and employment initiatives.
- Works with the Alumni Board Association in regional efforts focused on supporting McGeorge students and recent graduates with mentorship, job guidance, and increasing employment opportunities.
Individualized Career Advising:
- Manages advising program and serves as career advisor to assist all McGeorge program students and graduates in making interim and long-term career decisions.
- Collaborates with other departments in tracking student communications.
- Creates and maintains successful advising initiatives that focus on individualized, one-on-one, or small group career support.
- Ensures substantive and qualitative consistency among advisors through regular check-ins as well as tracking on CSO's online career management system, 12twenty.
- Continues to develop new and better ways to track students' experience and interests for purposes of customization of student outreach efforts and employment opportunities.
Career Skills and Professional Development Programming:
- Develops and manages educational programs to facilitate students' knowledge about the legal profession and career opportunities, while enhancing students' career skills, leadership skills, and professional development.
- Creates and manages the facilitation of networking opportunities for students with employers and alumni.
- Oversees the close coordination of events with student organizations and Office of Student Services.
- Partners with faculty teaching the innovative Legal Profession course for first-year law students by providing training materials on networking, application documents, and interviewing skills, among other professional development topics.
- Provides support in identifying and matching alumni and students as part of the mentor program; and coordinating to develop and update course itinerary based on student feedback.
- Innovates and helps administer major initiatives to support employment opportunities for recent graduates, including 3L Final Countdown, Job Search Workshops, and Recent Graduate Employment Initiative programming.
Market Research and Understanding:
- Researches and maintains a current understanding of the "new normal" in the legal market, as it continues to shift to accommodate the new technology, compliance, and regulatory aspects of legal practice.
- Manages the assessment and analysis of legal market trends and serves as liaison with faculty, the Alumni Association, the administration, and students to facilitate understanding of job market for students and law school graduates.
- Reports directly to the Dean and faculty on market trends.
Online and Printed Materials:
- Oversees the development and procurement of CSO-related materials for distribution in multi-media platforms for students and the campus.
- Collaborates with Admissions to ensure reporting of accurate and up-to-date employment and other career-related information on promotional materials and online law school search services such as Princeton Review and NALP Law School Directory.
Other:
- Assists the Dean of the law school in CSO-related activities as needed.
- Serves on the Management Team of the law school.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Juris Doctorate (JD) degree required.
- Current admission to a state bar.
- A minimum of five (5) years of Career Services or equivalent experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications |
Education and/or Experience:
- At least five (5) years in legal practice preferred.
- A record of substantial professional accomplishment and tested leadership and management skills are strongly desired.
- Knowledge and skill at strategic planning and developing and managing departmental budgets.
- Experience in building a new program or initiative or in taking an existing program to a higher level.
- Proven experience working successfully in a collaborative environment with a team of peers.
- Experience in effectively supervising and managing all elements of an event.
Communication & Reasoning:
- Dynamic, energetic, and outgoing personality with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with all constituents and show a strong commitment to helping law students develop the insight, skills and experience needed to secure a fulfilling career in the legal profession.
- Excellent oral and written skills to prepare and present professional workshops, panels, and presentations, and to develop handbooks, articles, and newsletters.
- Familiarity with, and interest in, trends in legal education and the legal market.
Computer Skills & Technical Skills:
- Intermediate to advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and Internet research.
- Proficient with career management software.
Other:
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.

Hiring Range |
$101,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
