Job Overview

Legal and Compliance is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. The team includes dedicated teams that support every aspect of Coursera's platform, including university, enterprise and industry partnerships.

To be successful in this role, we're looking for an attorney who is passionate about business growth and education. We want a candidate who is energized by the challenges of growing a B2B business globally and being a strategic business partner for a dynamic team. This role will engage with all levels of employees and management, so interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are vital to strong working relationships. The position requires a strong background in government contracting and commercial law.

Responsibilities



  • Manage the Legal & Compliance Enterprise team in AMER and take responsibility for supporting many aspects of Coursera's Enterprise business strategy in AMER, as well as the growth and development of the legal team in AMER
  • Manage the commercial contracting needs of the AMER team, both directly participating in contract negotiations ( with a focus on government contracts) and mentoring others
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with regional leadership and strategic partners and provide counsel on a potentially wide variety of legal matters, in partnership with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and outside counsel, on an as-needed basis
  • Educate business team members through ongoing training and support on sales and contractual matters, including developing internal knowledge, setting policy, creating self-service tools and participating in strategic discussions
  • Advise on risks and liabilities of proposed commercial transactions, product changes and implement legal initiatives to meet business objectives
  • Keep abreast of applicable laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact Coursera's commercial agreements and business practices in AMER


Basic Qualifications



  • 15+ years of relevant legal practice experience
  • Must be currently admitted to practice as an attorney, and be in active status and good standing with at least one state bar
  • Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation, including experience in complex government transactions and counseling internal clients on such matters
  • 5+ years as a team leader, managing a team of 3+ people, including experience managing and nurturing talent
  • Fluency in English and a high level of written and interpersonal communication skills


Preferred Qualifications



  • In-house counsel experience, ideally supporting a technology sales function
  • Experience building rapport with stakeholders at all levels of seniority across the business and the ability to explain complex concepts
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish is preferred, but not required

Compensation

US Zone 1 - San Francisco Metro, New York City Metro or Seattle Metro

This role is not available in Zone 1

US Zone 2 - CA (outside of SF Bay Area), CO, CT, DC, GA, IL, MA, MD, NY/NJ (other than NYC), OR, RI, TX, VA, WA (other than Seattle)

$170,000 - $200,000 USD

US Zone 3 - all other US locations

$156,400 - $184,000 USD

The range(s) listed above is the expected annual base salary for this role, subject to change.

Salary is just one component of Coursera's total rewards package. All regular employees are also eligible for a bonus program and equity in the form of RSU's.

A number of factors are taken into account when determining pay, which includes: job level, location, training/education, business need, skill set and internal equity.
