I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:
GW's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine ( MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/ AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. Additional information on MITM can be found at the following link: http://smhs.gwu.edu/microbiology/
MITM is searching for a full-time Research Assistant for Dr. Khan's laboratory. Dr. Khan's main interest is on studying the development and maintenance of CD8+ T cell immunity against Toxoplasma gondii which is a major opportunistic infection in HIV infected population, as individuals sero-positive for the parasite are susceptible to reactivation of chronic parasitic infection. Using a mouse model of toxoplasmic encephalitis, the laboratory recently reported that CD4 and CD8 T cell exhaustion can be a major cause for reactivation of latent parasitic infection. For coming years, the mechanisms involved in CD4 and CD8 T cell exhaustion/dysfunctionality, and the measures needed to restore the functionality of these cells, is one of the major focuses of the laboratory. The laboratory is responsible for the management of mice breeding colonies and performs diverse experiments including cell culture maintenance, cell preparation from animal tissues, real-time PCR and flow cytometry analysis.

This research support position contributes to research/development by assisting with experiments in Dr Khan's laboratory. The core responsibilities of this position include assisting with data collection and administration of experimental procedures, and assisting with administrative aspects of preparing manuscripts for publication. This position may perform some lab maintenance duties as a secondary function. This role typically works under immediate supervision, and the primary job functions do not require exercising independent judgment.
