JOB TITLE &CODE: ADVANCED PRACTICE PROFESSIONALS - Clinical Chief Advanced Practice Provider for Cardiology- Nurse Practitioner (85007) or Physician Assistant (85008)

DEPARTMENT: Heart and Vascular Institute

REPORTS TO: Administrative Director of Heart and Vascular Institute and Senior APP/Director from Office of Advanced Practice Professionals

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is responsible for planning and coordinating the activities of personnel providing adult Cardiology Services utilizing safe, efficient and acceptable methods.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master's Degree in Nursing

2. National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers

3. Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three years of extensive clinical experience with in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. ACNPs preferred but will consider FNPs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor's Degree as a Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant required.

2. Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required.

3. Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.

4. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three years of extensive clinical experience with in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates the delivery of care provided by the Cardiology APPs in accordance with the standards of care and the goals and mission of West Virginia University Medicine.

2. Monitors and evaluates quality of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) through rounds and performance improvement activities.

3. Coordinates activities between the Inpatient, Outpatient and Outreach programs along with a liaison with other departments and services.

4. Adheres to the Cardiology APP position description.

5. Collaborates with other health care providers in resolving patient care issues.

6. Serves as a clinical role model utilizing current knowledge and accepted technique.

7. Collaborates with physicians, nursing, care management, agencies, patients and families to ensure services are consistent with planned surgical interventions and pre and post op care.

8. Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.

9. Develops short and long term goals to improve quality of services.

10. Monitors aseptic technique of APPs and proper use of equipment.

11. Provides leadership and teaching to staff to ensure standards are met for APPs at all sites of services.

12. Participates in the annual budget process and monitors responsibility reports.

13. Prepares capital equipment requests, new program request and new product requests submitting to the OR Director of Perioperative Services (CVIS), Director of Inpatient Services and the Heart and Vascular Administrative Director. Ensures expenses do not exceed the approved budget for area of responsibility. Takes corrective action as necessary.

14. Collaborates with the Clinical Managers, Specialty (cardiovascular), Surgical Staff and Anesthesia Staff in implementing the CVIS schedule and patient care schedule.

15. Writes and/or coordinates studies to evaluate appropriateness, quality and safety of service provided relative to area of responsibility. Monitors compliance with regulatory agencies (i.e. JCAHO and State Health Department).

16. Writes standards of practice related to areas of responsibility.

17. Disseminates information to the unit.

18. Solicits staff/physician/nursing input on service issues to facilitate team decision-making.

19. Demonstrates positive problem solving/resolution utilizing effective negotiations skills.

20. Demonstrates assertiveness in interpersonal communication.

21. Supervises and manages the human resources of demonstrating leadership skills consistent with WVU Medicine behavioral standards.

22. Makes assignments.

23. Demonstrates leadership abilities in the supervision of the APPs.

24. Manages staffing problems, identifying resources, reallocating as necessary to meet the service needs.

25. Organizes and facilitates a monthly employee schedule and distributes the workload based on the approved staffing plans.

26. Participates in the development of the staff assigned to the Heart and Vascular Institute.

27. Collaborates with the Executive Physician Chairman, Director of Cardiology, Physicians, Director of Advanced Practice Providers, Director of Perioperative Services (OR and CVIS), Director of Cardiac Inpatient Services, Administrative Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute and APP Senior in conducting regular staff meetings to discuss issues.

28. Identifies the educational needs of the APPs and facilitates APP's participation. Acts as a role model and resource to staff.

29. Identifies own learning needs and makes plans to meet these needs.

30. Participates in meeting the goals and objectives of the work unit and department to ensure that the department contributes to the attainment of WVU's mission, goals and objectives.

31. Promotes and contributes positively to the teamwork of the department by volunteering to assist co-workers, contribution of ideas and problem solving with co-workers.

32. Other duties/projects as assigned.
