Description

We are seeking a Benefits Specialist to administer the Laboratory's leave and disability programs and policies. As a member of APL's Talent Services team you'll contribute to our core purpose to build community, ignite talent and partner to enable defining innovations.

As a Benefits Specialist you will...

  • Guide staff members regarding leave programs including short and long-term disability, family medical leave, military, parental and personal leaves and the impact of the leave status on other benefits. Coordinate with legal and payroll to guarantee adherence with state leave laws. Educate staff on long-term disability who are becoming eligible for Medicare.
  • Track claim status via vendor portal and reports and conduct regular calls with vendor to resolve claim issues.
  • Communicate claim status to staff members and supervisors. Act as liaison between staff and third party administrator on complex claim issues. Navigate difficult employee relations issues related to disability and/or FMLA claims. Provide guidance for proper timesheet administration during leave.
  • Facilitate education modules and presentations on the Laboratory's leave and disability programs.
  • Administer leave donation program. Review requests for donations, recommend approval and maintain records. Communicate with staff member throughout process.
  • Provide general health and welfare benefits customer service support to staff and retirees via phone and email, as needed.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess an Associate's Degree plus 2 years of experience in leave and disability administration. In lieu of degree, 5+ years of experience in leave and disability administration or equivalent experience in a Human Resources environment
  • Possess demonstrated superior customer service, teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Have strong problem solving skills with demonstrated proactive initiative in tackling issues
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Have exceptional organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and attention to detail
  • Have the ability to conduct difficult conversations with staff and supervisors on sensitive topics

You will go above and beyond our minimum qualifications if you...

  • Have a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field
  • Formal benefits training such as CEBS classes or workshops
  • Knowledge of employee benefits regulations including FMLA and USERRA

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
