Internal Job Title: Research Scientist I/II

Position Location: Cambridge, MA, onsite

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly talented and motivated synthetic / medicinal chemist to join the Global Discovery Chemistry group at BioMedical Research (NIBR) at our Cambridge, MA site. Using your creativity and tenacity, you will contribute to the discovery, development, and characterization of small molecules to further GDC's mission to discover innovative medicines

Your key responsibilities:

  • Independently conduct multi-step syntheses of small molecules, utilize novel methodologies, and technologies

  • Analyze and interpret data, solve synthetic issues, and design follow-up experiments

  • Collaborate with peers and work effectively and efficiently as an important part of a cross-functional team

  • Adhere to laboratory safety policies and practices

Essential requirements:

  • a recent BS or MS degree in organic chemistry with 0-5 years of industrial experience in the design, synthesis, and characterization of organic compounds. This is not a PhD level position.

  • A comprehensive knowledge of modern organic synthetic methods; medicinal chemistry knowledge and experience with digital tools and analysis for medicinal chemistry is a plus

  • Excellence in common purification, analytical techniques, and spectroscopy (NMR, UV, MS)

  • Strong problem solving and communication skills

  • Knowledge and efficient use of IT applications used to support the planning and execution of synthesis experiments, and communication of results

  • A strong collaborative approach to drive the effectiveness of a drug discovery team

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $60,600 to $112,600/year for Research Scientist I, and between $77,000 and $143,000 for Research Scientist II; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
