Organizational Unit Overview |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
Job Duties |
The Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices (
ADECP) provides leadership for the overall success of the School of Dental Medicine's (SoDM) Community Service Learning Centers (CSLCs), focusing on student and resident education and improving oral health in North Carolina, particularly in the rural and underserved areas of the state.
The
ADECP works in close collaboration with the offices of Clinical Affairs, Business and Financial Affairs, Human Resources, Faculty Affairs, Dental Education and Informatics, Student Affairs, Research, Innovation and Discovery, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (
AEGD) and all academic departments to support the School of Dental Medicine's mission, vision, programs and initiatives. In addition, the Associate Dean works closely with other Schools and Colleges at
ECU to provide information and services related to Extramural Clinical Practices.
The Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices is responsible for oversight, evaluation, and direction of all clinical and business processes at the CSLCs that assure required educational and financial sustainability and promote the highest quality patient care. The
ADECP will be a licensed dentist and capable of educating students/residents while providing a full range of comprehensive general dentistry services in a community-- based setting.
Specific duties include:
- Providing leadership in ensuring that the Community Service Learning Centers are a vibrant and integral part of the SoDM.
- Working closely with the Department Chairs, the Director of Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program and the Director of Predoctoral Education in the delivery of the curriculum and resident and student patient care activities in the CSLCs. Developing and monitoring the budget, hiring and supervising faculty and staff, stewarding the physical facilities and ensuring successful operational performance including exceptional customer service, quality of care, financial and educational sustainability and administrative and clinical standardization throughout the CSLC network.
- Supporting CSLC leadership in their efforts to assure quality of care by faculty, students and residents including implementation of best practices, assessment of care guidelines and compliance with all university, state, federal and CODA accreditation standards.
- Providing leadership, while working with Clinical Affairs, Compliance, Q & A and others to initiate and ultimately achieve AAAHC accreditation.
- Sustaining advisory committees for each Community Service Learning Center.
- Developing and coordinating community and regional outreach and oral health outreach programs, including a commitment to volunteer community services.
- Developing and maintaining individual and organizational relationships with the public, medical and dental, governmental, and funding organizations while ensuring the Community Service Learning Centers are an integral asset within the communities in which they reside.
- Advising the Dean on policy and advocacy issues impacted by national, state and regional and/or institutional trends, policies and regulations.
- Participating in activities of the American Dental Education Association, American Dental Association and other organizations and agencies commensurate with this role at the school, and as assigned by the Dean.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
- The ADECP has substantial independent administrative authority and discretion. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University.
The Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Affairs must qualify for a fixed-term, tenured or tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank/title of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor.
Contingent upon the availability of funding.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (

This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (

Minimum Education/Experience |
DDS or DMD from a CODA accredited institution or equivalent- Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina
- Broad knowledge of issues in dentistry and in dental education
- 10 years' experience in a leadership role in patient care administration or dental education
- Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with a record of consensus building in an academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly respond to requests with accuracy, reliability and flexibility

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation |
- Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured prior to the first day of employment)

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Master's Degree in health administration, business administration and/or completion of an AEGD, GPR or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience in leading patient care operations and supervising the work of others and building effective teams to identify and solve problems in a dental education or equivalent setting, preferably in multiple clinical locations
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within an organization and with outside organizations, agencies and individuals
- Demonstrated understanding of the research potential at the CSLCs
- Experience in community outreach activities
