Peer Recover Specialist- Substance Abuse Clinic- Days

The Peer Recovery Specialist's role is to support others in recovery from a substance use disorder. The Peer Recovery Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator toindividuals struggling with substance use disorder or seeking recovery, to engage individuals in treatment, help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. The Peer Recovery Specialistmust demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships.

Essential Job Statements

  • Provide recovery education to service recipients for every phase of the recovery journey frompre-recovery engagement, recovery initiation, recovery stabilization, and sustained recoverymaintenance.

  • Provide a model for both people in recovery and staff by demonstrating that recovery is possible. Present to staff on recovery experience and pathways.

  • Assist recovering persons to identify their personal interests, goals, strengths, and weaknessesregarding recovery.

  • Assist/coach recovering persons develop their own plan for advancing their recovery; for "Getting the life they want." Support individuals in advocating for their needs from professionals.

  • Recovery Planning -- facilitate (via personal coaching) the transition from a professionallydirected service plan to a self-directed Recovery Plan. The goal should be to transition fromprofessionally assisted recovery initiation to personally directed, community supportedrecovery maintenance.Participate with clinical team in treatment planning.

  • Promote self-advocacy by assisting recovering persons to have their voices fully heard; theirneeds, goals and objectives established as the focal point of rehabilitation and clinical services.

  • Maintain project logs, reports and records in appropriate files and database(s).

  • Actively identify and support linkages to community resources (communities of recovery,educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self- help groups,professional services, etc.) that support the recovering person's goals and interests. This willinvolve a collaborative effort including the recovering person, agency staff and other relevantstakeholders.

  • Support connections to community based, mutual aid groups. Link individuals toappropriate professional resources when needed. Provide vision-driven hope andencouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community-basedactivities (e.g., work, school, relationships, physical activity, self-directed hobbies, etc.).

  • Develop relationships with community groups/agencies in partnership with others in theagency.

  • As recovery specialist position evolves and knowledge increases, visit community resourceswith recovering persons to assist them in becoming familiar with potential opportunities.

  • Identify barriers (internal and external) to full participation in community resources anddeveloping strategies to overcome those barriers.

  • Maintain contact by phone and/or e-mail with recovering person after they leave the programto insure their ongoing success and to provide re-engagement support in partnership withothers in the agency if needed. Long-term engagement, support, and encouragement.

  • Other duties as directed by Division Chief, Medical Director, and/or Management Staff.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.

Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Adolescents (13-17 years)

Adults (18-64 years).

Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Education:

Substance use counseling certificate, Associate's degree in human services, or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology or a related field.

Licensure/Certification Required:

Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in the State of Virginia through the Virginia Certification Board

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Registered Peer Recovery Specialist, Revive Trainer

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience

Minimum 1 year working as a Peer Recovery Specialist

Preferred 3 or more years as a Peer Recovery Specialist

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Training in Motivational Interviewing preferred.

Cultural Responsiveness

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

Experience working with diverse populations.

Knowledge and understanding of multiple paths to recovery including 12 Step, SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma.

Experience working with clients using medications for opioid use disorder preferred.

Experience with recovery resources in the Richmond area.

Familiarity with local recovery housing options, higher levels of sud care, and recovery community organizations.

Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.

General office environment.

May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.

Required to car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. *
