About the Job

Working hours: This is a temporary appointment, working up to 67 days maximum working days per year. Hours will fluctuate based on camps. This position is in person scheduled on weekdays.
Work Location: North Central Research and Outreach Center | Grand Rapids, MN
Position start date: May 30, 2025
Position end date: August 22, 2025
* Can work up to 5 days per week as a temp/casual employee not to exceed 67 total days. Excludes University holidays.
* Required camp training June 2 - 4th in Grand Rapids and one training day in St Paul on June 11th (travel to and from St Paul will be compensated

Pay Rates:
Lead Educator & Coordinator: $22.20/hour
Camp Coordinator: $21.00/hour
Education Associate $20.00/hours

Lead Educator & Coordinator
Pay Rate: $22.20/hour

The Lead Educator and Coordinator is responsible for facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade during the Bell Museum's statewide summer camps. This position creates a safe, engaging, age-appropriate and positive learning environment for campers while working with and being a camp team leader alongside the Statewide Youth and Family Programs Coordinator for summer camp and ROC staff. Statewide camps are a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and select University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers.

Camp Facilitation and Instruction (80%)

  • Work closely with Statewide Youth & Family Programs Coordinator to lead engaging day camps for up to 25 children per class using provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more. This includes working outdoors.
  • Follow safety guidelines and practices to ensure that campers are safe at all times with on-going supervision.
  • Develop a personal teaching style to accommodate camper learning style(s).
  • Manage campers, group dynamics, and behaviors
  • Provide direction to and work collaboratively with camp and ROC staff.
  • Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.

Camp Prep and Administrative Tasks (20%)

  • Co-facilitate and prepare camp staff training
  • Prepare supplies for camp and community outreach activities
  • Assist in onboarding and managing camp staff
  • Regular check-ins with Statewide Youth & Family Programs Coordinator and camp and ROC staff
  • Learn and enforce first aid and safety protocols.
  • Conduct reflections/evaluations of the program and experiences.
  • Travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for training (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by Bell Museum)

Position Title: Camp Coordinator
Pay Rate: $21.00/hour

The Camp Coordinator works with summer camp and ROC staff to create a safe, engaging, age-appropriate, and positive learning environment for campers. This position is responsible for supporting communication with campers and guardians, maintaining attendance and daily camp rosters, and assisting with camp during the Bell Museum's statewide summer camps. This position will occasionally assist the Lead Educator & Coordinator with facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade. Bell Museum statewide camps is a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and select University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers.

Camp Management (85%)

  • Communicate with parents, bussing, caterers, and camp partners
  • Maintain camper and guardian documentation
  • Learn, help to create, and enforce first aid and safety protocols
  • Fill in for Lead Educator roles as needed, including but not limited to:
    Facilitate engaging camp activities for up to 25 children per class using a provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more. This includes indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Provide direction to Education Associates
  • Assist and work collaboratively with Statewide Youth and Families Program Coordinator, camp staff, and ROC staff in creating a safe, fun and enriching camp environment. Manage campers, group dynamics, and behaviors.
  • Assist with setup and clean up of camp activities.
  • Camp staff are required to follow all safety related guidelines, policies, and procedures at all times and ensure that campers are safe at all times.
  • Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.

Administrative Tasks (15%)

  • Participate in regular check-ins with camp staff and Statewide Youth and Families Program Coordinator
  • Conduct regular reflections/evaluations of the program and experiences with staff, partner organizations, and parents
  • Travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for training (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by the Bell Museum)

Position Title: Education Associate
Pay Rate: $20.00/hours

The Education Associate creates a safe, engaging, age-appropriate, and positive learning environment for campers while working with other summer camp and Research and Outreach Center (ROC) staff. This position is responsible for providing first aid, knowledge of emergency procedures, and general safety for campers. Additionally, this position will be assisting with co-facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade. Bell statewide camps are a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and select ROC.

Camp Facilitation and Instruction (85%)

  • Lead camp safety protocols and first aid.
  • Fill in for Lead Educator roles as needed, including but not limited to implementing engaging camp activities for up to 25 children per class using a provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more.

  • Lead and assist in facilitating activities indoors and outdoors.
  • Camp staff are required to follow all safety related guidelines, policies, and procedures at all times and ensure that campers are safe at all times.
  • Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.

  • Training or experience working in camps as a summer camp leader.
  • Previous teaching experience and/or possessing a teaching license.

  • CPR and First Aid training and/or certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.00 - $22.20 per hour depending on education/qualifications/experience.
