About the Job

The Masonic Cancer Center (MCC) Education Outreach position offers an undergraduate student (both UMN and non UMN students) pursuing a science education career the opportunity to work with students (primarily high school-aged) to promote their STEM education and career development.

The Office of Education and Training at MCC aims to attract students to cancer research and care by offering a variety of opportunities, including: internships and structured programming to metro area students & teachers, on-campus field trips & lab tours, visits to classrooms & community centers, and exhibitions at large-scale youth-focused events (science fairs, career fairs, Goldy vs. Cancer at the State Fair, family STEM nights, etc.).

At this time we are specifically looking to hire for summer 2025, with the possibility of continuing into the school year in a lighter, more flexible role. For the summer, the Education Outreach position will support the M-ASCEND internship program, an NIH grant-funded program that is a collaboration between MCC and the Program in Health Disparities Research (PHDR). M-ASCEND offers 10 rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to work on the UMN-TC campus for eight weeks in the summer. In the program the high school interns conduct a semi-independent scientific investigation and create a research poster to present; attend lectures on public health and cancer biology; learn lab skills, network and tour professional UMN research labs; and build college readiness and professional skills.

The Education Outreach student will support program staff in providing daily programming for the high schoolers Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-3:00pm, in addition to preparation, set up, clean up, and team meetings. Depending on background and interest, example tasks include designing & facilitating the science-focused activities for the interns, supporting students on their research project (including data analysis and poster creation/presentation), mentorship & relationship building, setting up & maintaining a science classroom laboratory, and preparing science materials (mixing reagents, pouring agar plates, etc.). The Education Outreach student will be trained and supported by staff in all tasks. This position is for 30 - 40 hours a week at $15.25/hour. The program runs from June 16th to August 7th; mentors will need to be available beginning early June for training.

Priority application deadline is April 9th. Rolling applications accepted until the position is filled.
