JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) is seeking a Research Technologist to provide diagnostic support in the avian serology section. Routine duties include handling blood samples and other samples from animals and their environments, conducting tests to detect antibodies (including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), agglutination tests and immunodiffusion tests), and reporting results through the laboratory information management system (LIMS). Experience with antibody detection tests is highly desirable. The technologist will also assist with evaluation and processing of a wide variety of samples submitted to ADL by its clients, and the completion of data entry to accurately accession the samples in LIMS. Other duties of this position include maintaining standard operating procedures and quality assurance and quality control practices, ordering supplies, maintaining work areas, and ensuring coverage of workload. The technologist is also expected to cross-train in other areas of the diagnostic laboratory as needs arise and shift into related disciplines as new diagnostic tests come online. Proficiency testing may be required to conduct specific tests, in order to demonstrate competency to meet the lab.

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Education and Experience:

This position requires a bachelor's degree in animal sciences, biology, microbiology, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of animal health and animal agriculture is highly desirable. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication (verbal and written) skills are essential. Attention to detail, accuracy and precision, good judgment, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment are expected attributes of the successful candidate. Rabies vaccination and biannual titer checks are strongly recommended for this position and would be paid for and/or provided by the University.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$34,800.00 - $50,500.00
