Under the general direction of the Electric Services Director, coordinates efficiency, renewable energy, sustainability and more, to continually improve the value of services Ames Electric offers to the Ames community. Works with electric customers to help meet energy needs as well as to handle questions and complaints. Administers activities of the Electric Utility's energy services programs including the energy efficiency program. Educates customers as to the operation and procedures of the Electric Utility. Meets annually with large customers for customized energy analysis. Independent worker and self-starter.

The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. Examples of Essential Job Functions

Examples of Essential Job Functions: Assists in the development and implementation of the Electric Utility's energy services programs and projects, including the energy efficiency program; renewable energy contracts, load-shaping devices or campaigns, beneficial electrification, and polices related to distributed energy resources; develops, coordinates and conducts educational presentations promoting the community's involvement in the utility's strategic plan; develops literature including monthly articles for the newsletter prepared in conjunction with the Public Relations Officer; work with Sustainability Coordinator to hire, train, and lead part-time staff; coordinates activities with other electric department employees as needed; publicizes electric utility programs; assists consumers in the identification and evaluation of energy saving opportunities; answers public inquiries related to use of electric resources; prepares graphs, charts and other visual aids for presentations; makes recommendations to city management concerning goals and policies; develops and administers program budget; prepares work plans and operating reports; operates light vehicle; analyzes large customer energy use and conservation potential; identifies, proposes, and coordinates projects to achieve City Council's sustainability goals. Requires frequent appearances on TV, radio, city ads; Speak in front of various community groups and lead events such as Ecofair, and the city's energy booth at the farmers' market.

Other Job Functions: Assists and/or acts as liaison to ISU on research projects.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, business, or other field closely related to energy management; one year of experience working with energy efficiency programs; some integrated marketing and public relations experience preferred including digital marketing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices related to the efficient use of electrical resources; knowledge of state and federal energy efficiency activities and projects; knowledge of all safety rules as stated in the adopted safety manual.

Skill in preparing work plans, operating reports, and related budgets; skill in developing and conducting effective public presentations, skill in energy analysis and strategy.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, other employees, city management, contractors, vendors, the press, and outside agencies; ability to identify customer needs, especially large customers; ability to develop and initiate specific activities to achieve program goals; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to operate a light vehicle.

Supplemental Information

General Physical Characteristics: The work involves sitting 65 percent of the time; standing (but not walking) 25 percent of the time; standing and walking 10 percent of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; infrequently lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds; and infrequently lifting objects from 25 to 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects or parts, use of measurement devices or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Required Physical Activities: Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, finger dexterity, talking, and hearing.

Environmental Conditions: The work is performed inside.

Examples of Equipment Used on the Job: Light vehicle; general office equipment; a variety of visual aids; computers and peripheral equipment; word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphics software; a variety of printed materials; a variety of measurement and diagnostic tools and equipment; educational materials.

Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience; phone interview; hiring assessment; on-site interview, which will include a manager meeting and written exercise; and completion of reference checks, motor vehicle check and a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

Preference may be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum. Depending on the number of qualified candidates, the City may forego phone interviews.

Compensation Philosophy:
The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy for our merit salary ranges that provides growth for employees as they gain experience and expertise in their roles. The minimum pay of each range is intended to reflect an employee's qualifications that meet the position's minimum requirements. The median of any range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial or extensive training. The City may consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills that are above the minimum requirements when considering a salary closer to the median. The median salary for this position is $88,615.
