******This position can be hired as either a Tech III or Senior depending on experience***

This job can be filled at the third or fourth level of the non-Engineer degreed engineering technologist job classification. This position is preferably located at McGuire Nuclear Station (Huntersville, NC).

Nuclear Engineering Technologist III provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Senior Engineering Technologist provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently with increased latitude for unreviewed work.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to prepare specimens for metallographic and electron microscopy examination.
  • Demonstrates a strong personal commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Utilizes common lab tooling such as cutting saws, abrasive saws, polishing equipment, and hand tools to prepare metallurgical samples.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
  • Comfortable working with radioactively contaminated materials.
  • Independently prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies.
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineering Technologist III

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) with a minimum of three years of related experience
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) and a minimum of five years of related experience or High School diploma/GED and nine years minimum of related experience.

Senior Nuclear Engineering Technologist

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and a minimum of three either of related experience
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) with a minimum of eight years of related experience or High school diploma/GED and twelve (12) years minimum of related experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Engineering Technologist experience supporting Duke Nuclear stations.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Experience in the power generation utility industry.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear, fossil, and hydroelectric power plant systems
  • Chemistry and/or mechanical background
  • Possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Effective problem solving and analytical ability.
  • Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Nuclear Asset Suite (NAS)

Specific Requirements

  • Able to achieve nuclear site access.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

Working Conditions

  • The working environment consists of on-site work at a metallurgical laboratory and radiological processing facility. with an accompanying radiological hot cell for contaminated metallurgical samples.
