Global Director - Process Safety

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

(1) Develop and execute the Company's process safety and fire protection and life safety strategy to achieve our Vision of Zero in PSM:



  • Develop and implement global process safety management programs, standards, management systems and compliance assurance to ensure operational excellence.
  • Oversee the fire protection and life safety strategy for the global manufacturing and blending location.
  • Develop and execute standards and programs to reduce and eliminate the risk of incidence of process, equipment, and systems-related injuries and illness, exposure, releases, and property loss.
  • Gain achievement of managerial commitment to safety through the development of proactive strategies in process safety management and fire protection and life safety, Company-developed programs, standards and procedures
  • Collaborate with other functions including but not limited to Research and Development, Risk Management and Operations to execute the PSM strategy.
  • Assume leadership and mentorship roles, as required, in specific process and chemical engineering initiatives.
  • Maintain a thorough and working knowledge of existing and proposed changes in federal, state, local and international process safety regulations and fire protection and life safety as they relate to business operations and recommend changes/updates to our programs/processes where necessary.
  • Upgrade, and continuously improve, the company MOC procedure; provide functional specifications, as required, for IT configuration for MOC module.
  • Provide necessary support to sites in completing details of Management of Change (MOC).
  • Provide necessary support for projects and initiatives related to process safety, including but not limited to process safety information, electrical classification documents, SOPs, and MOCs.
  • Support sites by providing tools and training resources to advance health and safety initiatives.
  • Work to consistently build the competence of the site EHS professionals and engineers in the areas of PSM and health and safety and fire protection and life safety.
  • Oversee the selection of capital improvements for process safety and fire protection and life safety initiatives. Develop a strategic plan for fire protection and life safety improvements
  • Represent Sherwin Williams on relevant technical committees.
  • Support due diligence evaluation and costing of PSM and FP&LS matters. Support the successful integration of acquired sites.
  • Build capability to address safety risk through Inherently Safer Design (ISD)


(2) Risk Analysis, Prevention & Investigations:



  • Perform appropriate Impact Analyses, as necessary.
  • Participate in process-related incident/accident investigations when necessary.
  • Identify and recommend acceptable PSM consulting firms for local assistance with PSM compliance when necessary.


(3) Training & Support:



  • Provide process safety input for Global EHS standards development, training and audit support.
  • Review EHS capital projects for guideline approval.
  • Lead specialized process safety training for business segment management/employees.
  • Develop global competence in flammable and combustible preventive measures and SW and legal standards compliance.


(4) Compliance / Legal:



  • Lead team-based process hazard analyses (HAZOPS or What if Analyses) as required for PSM compliance.; generate finding and recommendation reports; enter action items in MIRA
  • Lead team Schedule and conduct process safety management and fire protections and life safety compliance audits, report on findings and make recommendations for corrective actions;
  • Serve as Lead or Safety segment auditor for EHS audits.
  • Provide expert witness testimony involving process safety issues
  • May be called upon to represent the Company in external regulatory inspections and inquiries involving Process Safety issues
  • Determine OSHA or country-specific process safety management and fire protection and life safety
  • Maintain ongoing professional development in related areas of process safety management fire protection and life safety and maintain applicable professional certifications

FORMAL EDUCATION:

Required:



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum or other related engineering fields


Preferred:



  • Master's level degree in Chemical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.)


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:



  • Minimum of 15-years of prior experience in PSM regulated facilities.
  • Experience with batch processing, chemical process safety, process hazard analyses and methods (What-If, HAZOP, FEMA, etc), environmental capture and control systems, safety instrumented systems, process and behavioral accident/incident investigation, PSM/RMP auditing, EHS Management Systems
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (chemistry based and processing based)
  • Previous implementation experience with risk reduction through design and controls
  • PSM and fire protection and life safety project management experience
  • Knowledge of general safety engineering
  • Experience and comfort level around interacting with and engaging senior level employees.


Preferred:



  • International experience and knowledge of global standards including process safety, fire protection and life safety, and safety engineering and hazards.
