Job Summary

The general responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Apply scientific programming, mathematical data analysis, statistical analysis, machine learning, machine vision, image processing, high performance computing, and bioinformatics techniques
  • Interface with and support researchers within and outside of our lab
  • Develop and apply new techniques and tools for data acquisition and analysis as needed.
  • Participate in intramural and extramural scientific meetings and discourse
  • Develop rigorous theoretical models, neuroscientific hypotheses, and experimental designs
  • Participate in the writing of journal papers and code repository documentation

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $75,700 - $160,500 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Foundations of Cognition Lab within the Weill Institute for Neurosciences uses experimental and computational approaches to understand the function of healthy brains and the origins of dysfunction in brain disease. The hire will contribute on one or more projects in the lab to develop data acquisition and analysis pipelines for specific scientific questions and funded collaborative efforts.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer / Computational / Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of HPC / Data Science / AI.
  • Working knowledge of applications programming and software development, databases and data systems, statistical methods and tools, and modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments through prioritizing tasks and managing time.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Working project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in Computer / Computational / Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization preferred.
  • Coursework or a degree in biological sciences preferred.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of one of the following: Scalable systems, distributed systems, or systems performance.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization, and to iteratively improve data science methodologies working with biomedical domain experts.
