Job Summary

This position involves technical acumen for planning, designing, developing, implementing and administering data-based systems that acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data and metadata. Maintains and optimizes systems and migrates data and systems as needed. Ensures integrity and completeness of data and workflow, manages and / or develops data practices, databases and information systems as well as guidelines, dictionaries, registries and / or services. May include interpretation of scientific research data artifacts as well as mediation across science and technology domains and long-term data care. As information architect and data steward, designs systems, data products and / or data production processes while focusing on data curation, data exchange, data security, data integrity and information environments. (Re)evaluates frameworks, strategies, standards and standards-making activities. May involve work with a project-level data repository, a center or an archive.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $160,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Learning Health System (LHS) Embedded-Scientist Training and Research (E-STAR) Center is one of 16 funded LHS Centers of Excellence by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for the period of January 2024 through December 2028. The Center consists of 3 Cores that support E-STAR scholars with training and research in partnership with UCSF affiliated health systems. The Administrative Core (AC) oversees health system partnerships, program implementation and evaluation. The Research and Education Core (REC) administers the training curriculum and work-in-progress seminars. The Research Data and Analytics Core (RDAC) provides direct and coordinated support for research project study designs, analysis, health informatics and electronic health record applications.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams for team management, scheduling and document archives
  • Tableau and SQL programming
  • Ability to prepare data models unassisted
  • Familiarity with data model patterns in one or more common business or academic domains
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements
  • Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models
  • Thorough knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems
  • Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models. Critical thinking skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Epic/Clarity reporting writing and data manipulations

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with statistical software with capabilities in multi-level regression and time-series analysis
  • Experience in supporting and coaching research project leads and trainees
