Job Summary

The Information System Analyst 2 involves providing a variety of IT Services. The candidate plays a crucial technical role in assisting the Systems Administrator Manager in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Hooper Foundation, and the Department of Anatomy for all IT-related matters. Responsibilities include but are not limited to managing departmental lab servers, troubleshooting and fixing server hardware failures, RAID failures, performance, and connectivity problems. Helps System Administration Manager with ZFS file storage systems with hundreds of terabytes of research data for labs within the departments.

The Information System Analyst 2 is accountable for planning and coordinating the operating system installation, configuration and providing comprehensive and specialized desktop support for scientific systems and equipment. Troubleshoots and ensures functionalities of scientific software and hardware in labs for faculty and lab members to do their research and experiments.

The Information System Analyst 2 serves as a department liaison to the UCSF IT Center regarding campus computing services, IT service requests, security incidents, etc., for the departments. Works closely with the UCSF Field Services and UCSF IT Security group.

The incumbent will provide support for all lab websites hosting on the UCSF Acquia and Pantheon platforms. Knowledge of CMS (Drupal and WordPress) is essential.

The incumbent also works as a finance assistant to the Microbiology & Immunology finance manager for some finance-related duties. Knowledge of UCSF financial enterprise applications such as Peoplesoft, MyReports, GLV, and UCPath is essential.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $70,600 - $117,600 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The School of Medicine's Basic Science departments are a crucial anchor of UCSF's research efforts. Their faculty's unparalleled commitment to, and curiosity about, understanding the underpinnings of biology holds promise for far-reaching impacts on human health. The departments are Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology & Immunology, Biochemistry & Biophysics, and Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology.

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Mission Bay and Parnassus Heights. Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to postdoctoral fellows and graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degrees.

The Department of Anatomy is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching. The Department includes 15 faculty members with primary full-time appointments, 15 faculty with joint appointments, and 50+ postdoctoral fellows and students engaged in research that covers questions in cell biology, developmental biology and the neurosciences. Faculty have laboratories at both the Parnassus Heights campus, where there is a focus of interest in cancer biology, and at the Mission Bay campus, where many of the neurobiology faculty are located. The administrative office of the Department is located at the Parnassus Heights campus. Anatomy faculty and staff are committed to building a diverse community that is welcoming and supportive, one that will nurture education and research.

The G.W. Hooper Research Foundation is an organized research unit within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. We perform scientific research and training at Parnassus Heights.

The Parker Institute housed within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology includes six centers - UCSF, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Stanford Medicine, UCLA, the University of Pennsylvania and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The Parker Institute's goal is to accelerate the development of breakthrough immune therapies capable of turning cancer into a curable disease by ensuring the coordination and collaboration of the field's top researchers and quickly translating their findings into patient treatments.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3+ years of experience in desktop support and systems administration or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Minimum 2+ years of related experience
  • Experience with scientific software and hardware in labs
  • General knowledge of several areas of IT.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Basic knowledge of incident response procedures. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications
  • Knowledge of business processes and procedures. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies. Demonstrated skills applying security controls to computer software and hardware.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with NAS/DAS storage and ZFS file system
  • Excellent customer service skills, can work with a team or independent, detail oriented
  • Knowledge of Drupal CMS
  • Knowledge of Linux systems administration and maintenance

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge relating to the design and development of software. Basic knowledge of secure software development.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Knowledge of UCSF enterprise applications such as ServiceNow, PeopleSoft, BigFix, BearBuy, MyReports, UCPath, GLV, Dell DDPE, Symantec Endpoint Protection
