Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Business Manager
III,
SVPR for the Rutgers Democracy Lab (
RDL) which is part of the Eagleton Institute of Politics. The Business Manager
III will report to the Executive Director of the
RDL, the Business Manager II of the Eagleton Institute and will also work with the Accounting Manager of the Eagleton Institute.
The Rutgers Democracy Lab(
RDL) was established through a transformative gift received in November 2024. Its mission is to serve as a vibrant hub for civic engagement and a collaborative workshop for studying, analyzing, and addressing the challenges and opportunities of contemporary democracy.
RDL embodies a bold commitment to equipping students with the tools and knowledge to engage with, strengthen, and sustain democracy for future generations. The Lab also seeks to examine emerging threats, such as the influence of social media, and explore their profound impact on democratic processes.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Reviews and approves business transactions including requisitions, expense reports, general ledger adjustments and payroll commitment accounting instructions. The Business Manager will have broad discretion to approve or reject transactions based on compliance with university policies and procedures.
- Performs monthly reconciliation of department payroll distribution, outstanding commitment report, and transaction account reports.
- Analyzes reports and assist leadership staff with the interpretation of financial data.
- Ensures department adherence to budget.
- Hires, trains and supervises a Grade 5, Accounting Specialist, to be hired Spring 2025. The Accounting Specialist will handle the day-to-day fiscal operations of the Democracy Lab.
- Works with the Eagleton Business Manager II and RDL Executive Director on yearly and quarterly budget preparation, forecasting, effort certification and financial reporting.
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with the staff at the RDL and the Eagleton Institute of Politics, ensuring adherence to university policy and communication of changes in policies and procedures.
- Provides training to new business staff at the Democracy Lab and will ensure that they have appropriate access to university business systems needed to perform their job responsibilities.
- The Eagleton Institute if a collaborative team. On occasion, all members are asked to participate in Institute-wide and/or cross team projects.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
- Also requires a minimum of five years of related professional experience in a finance or accounting function, preferably in a leadership or managerial role of increasing responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with Oracle Cloud Financials, PeopleSoft, Hyperion, and Marketplace Procurement systems preferred.
- Master's Degree is preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Eagleton offices are located within a historic building with no elevator.
- The duties of this position regularly involve navigating stairs numerous times a day.

- This position is paid from a five-year gift, and continuation is contingent upon available funds.
