HDR seeks an experienced and collaborative employment law attorney to serve as Chief Human Resources Counsel as an advisor and strategic partner supporting the Human Resources department and senior leaders on the full-range of global employment laws supporting employee relations, recruiting, benefits, compensation, ID&E, immigration, etc. Our ideal candidate has legal experience and subject matter expertise practicing a broad base of employment-related law. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, superior oral and written communication skills, an ability to anticipate and deliver legal support to satisfy the needs of a dynamic, diverse, and global business team, and the flexibility to manage an evolving variety of assignments. Responsibilities
- Provide expert, pragmatic, solution-oriented, preventative, and proactive legal advice involving a wide-range of employment-law related matters.
- Collaborate with the HR team to provide legal support for all types of employment-related issues relevant to a global, employee-owned A&E company.
- Provide enterprise-level and case-specific legal advice as a trusted and strategic legal advisor to HR and senior leaders across a global enterprise.
- Provide enterprise-and-jurisdiction-appropriate practical, actionable, employment-law-related advice related to hiring, performance management, discipline, terminations, internal investigations, contingent worker issues, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour compliance, and general employee risk management, employee mobility, immigration, employee competition.
- Handle sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality while displaying professionalism and tact with all levels of the organization.
- Engage in and monitor employment law-related trends.
- Develop proactive protocols to identify and manage employment-law-related risks and advise company management of the same.
- Coordinate and manage outside counsel.
- Review and support the development and implementation of employment-law-related policies and processes to proactively mitigate risk and ensure compliance with laws.
- Collaborate across the Legal Department for the professional growth and development of the legal team through formal and informal mentoring.
- Develop and implement HR-legal-related training programs as necessary.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Law firm experience highly preferred.
- Experience with management of direct reports / team(s) highly preferred.
- Experience on global projects preferred.
- Functional knowledge of ERISA
- Member in good standing of a state bar, Nebraska preferred.
- Travel expectation (10% / 6 times a year)
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active license to practice law
- A minimum of 18 years of progressive experience practicing law including litigating complex matters for the architecture, engineering, or construction industry within a law firm and/or management of claims and litigation in an in-house legal department or professional liability insurer with preference given to candidates with a blend of experience
- Significant involvement and skill in (i) drafting and editing legal memoranda and correspondence, (ii) briefs, (iii) legal research, (iii) cost and schedule analysis, and (iv) organizing and analyzing documentary records
- Exemplary analytical and oral and written communication skills, particularly in persuasion, diplomacy, leadership, and advocacy
- Excellent business acumen, with the ability to think strategically and advise on creative business-oriented solutions to legal issues, balancing legal risks against business interests in complex and ambiguous situations
- Strong results orientation with a dedicated client focus and ability to establish a trusted advisor relationship with business clients
- Extensive experience with complex agreements (e.g., negotiating, interpreting, dispute resolving, litigating)
- Proven track record of increasing leadership responsibilities; leader who is results-oriented, highly collaborative, pragmatic, flexible, takes initiative, and leverages systems and processes to make strategic decisions
- Demonstrated track record with change order management, disputes, litigation, arbitration, and mediation
- Mastery managing multiple responsibilities and accountabilities to meet demanding deadlines in a fast-paced environment, prioritize workflow, and adjust to frequent workload fluctuations
- Expertise to identify and manage risk inherent to projects in the engineering/architecture consulting industry
- Management and mentoring experience (leading, building, and operating within teams)
- Demonstrated experience of being proactive and focused on continuous improvement
- Superior collaboration, pragmatism, and effective communication skills to interact across organization, with clients, contractors, and subcontractors and drive results
- Experience on global projects preferred
- Strong teamwork skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to lead through trusted advising
- Willingness to travel 25% of the time
