Job Summary:

The Office of Social Health Sciences and Programs (OSHSP) at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) oversees, creates synergies, and guides the growth of SMPH's current and future initiatives, policies and programs that are designed to study and eliminate health disparities. One new program, the Orion Initiative, seeks to improve rural health care, initially in targeted pilot Wisconsin communities.

This position will start in the early stages of this exciting new program and engage in communications planning and development for internal and external audiences.

Reporting to the Orion Initiative Administrative Associate Director, the Communications Manager will become a member of the growing Orion Initiative team, collaborating closely with Orion and OSHSP leadership and staff to strategically develop and position Orion Initiative content for maximum impact, locally, state-wide, and nationally. Additionally, they will be responsible for producing reports and working with funded partners to communicate the impact of the work. They will also lead the marketing of the program to future partners.

This position involves leading website maintenance, expansion, and reorganization, staying informed on digital trends, and proactively anticipating future content needs. The Communications Manager will also develop social media marketing and targeted email campaigns and will offer graphic design and layout expertise, design marketing campaigns, and institute specific branding guidelines. Additionally, this position develops creative strategies to promote the work of the Orion Initiative. Responsibilities will include developing and adapting content for the website (such as articles, internal & external reports, research papers, and news posts for broader online accessibility), email subscriber community, and the media. Acting as a member of the Orion Initiative, the School of Medicine and Public Health and the Office of Social Health Sciences and Programs, this role will work collaboratively to advance the strategic goals in all three areas.


Responsibilities:
Develops and supervises the execution of communication programs and may supervise personnel and/or other resources in support of institutional or unit communication goals.

  • 15% Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives
  • 20% Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders
  • 25% Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets
  • 10% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • 30% Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences

Qualifications:

Minimum Required Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
-Minimum 5 years relevant communications experience including in digital content and marketing.

Preferred Skills, Experience, Qualifications:
-Minimum 5 years relevant communications experience including website, marketing, and social media, preferably in a community, governmental, university, philanthropic foundation, or health care setting.
-Experience in meeting with and taking guidance from senior level management.
-Experience in community engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Demonstrated exemplary oral and written communication skills.
-Excellent organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
-Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills in a team setting.
-Proven ability to work independently and to be flexible to changing priorities.
-Skills in graphic design or managing graphic design projects.
-Website development and management skills including content development, layout, digital accessibility, and overall user experience.
-Demonstrated understanding of health, health care and/or health equity in Wisconsin.

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
