About the Job

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Facilities Management is a department within University Services which is composed of the departments and people who deliver the non-academic operations across the University of Minnesota system. Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all buildings, grounds and the energy management needs of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Facilities Management works to provide a safe, reliable and welcoming campus in support of the University's mission of teaching, research and outreach. FM's responsibilities include over 25 million square feet in more than 280 buildings across 1200 acres in the Twin Cities.

Landcare is an operations unit within Facilities Management, responsible for campus landscape design and maintenance. This position assists with the recruitment, onboarding, and training of student employees, as well as leads, coordinates and inspects student work. As a lead worker, this position works alongside student employees, and trains students on Landcare procedures and standards. The position reports to a Landcare supervisor.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recruitment and Onboarding (20%)
* Assist with management of the online job application intake and review process: maintain and update posting, review incoming applications, interview student candidates, make recommendations about hiring.
* Attend student job fairs and other recruitment events as appropriate to engage potential employees and share information about Landcare's student employment program.
* Work with students to ensure completion of all necessary paperwork including I9s, passport, drivers license, background check authorization, scheduling information, etc.
* Request student PAN process.
* Ensure student academic schedules fit with department scheduling needs.
* Provide student orientation including department overview, review of SOPs, supplying PPE, introducing campus locations and staff, initial training, etc.
* Other tasks as assigned.

Administrative and Coordination Activities (40%)
* Schedule student labor to meet the needs of various Landcare crews and work locations.
* Scout campus for student work projects such as mowing, mulching, trimming, litter collection, planting, etc. Estimate project hours and assign students accordingly.
* Coordinate logistics of student work, including materials, equipment and transportation between campus locations.
* Meet with student crews daily to coordinate and schedule work. Collaborate with supervisor and fulltime gardening staff to ensure student labor resources are assigned efficiently and effectively across campus.
* Regularly inspect student work to ensure compliance with Landcare standards. Work alongside students to correct inadequate work.
* Receive and review student time-off requests for approval with supervisor.
* Monitor student attendance and assist supervisor with attendance policy enforcement.
* Advise supervisor regarding student performance and advancement.
* Review and approve student time cards.
* Ensure student completion of required safety trainings.
* Other tasks as assigned.

Lead Worker (40%)
* Work alongside students to complete assigned tasks and demonstrate proper standards and procedures.
* Perform student tasks/supplement student crews when needed to assist with campus event service, snow removal, ice management, and landscape maintenance.
* Train students on the safe and proper use and care of tools and equipment including pruning shears, mowers, weed whips, blowers, edgers, carts and UTVs, etc.
* Other tasks as assigned.

Physical and environmental requirements
This position works in both an office setting and outdoors and is exposed to year-round weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and snow. The position will be required to drive University vehicles on campus and between campus facilities. Work may involve the use of various mechanized equipment requiring personal protective equipment (PPE). All required PPE will be provided by the employer. Depending on the tasks assigned, the position may be working independently or with a team.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Required (minimum) qualifications
* High School diploma/GED and two years operations and/or student support experience.
* AA degree in horticulture, facilities management or related field
* Ability to lead student workers on specific tasks.
* Excellent organizational and communication skills
* Skilled in the use of digital technology including computers, electronic communications devices, social media, spreadsheets and digital calendar software
* Experience operating grounds maintenance equipment
* Valid Driver's License
* Ability to repetitively lift and carry 50 lbs

Preferred qualifications
* Knowledge of horticulture and/or grounds maintenance
* 6 months experience as a grounds maintenance worker

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.90-$29.27/hr depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
