The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Function as a technical consultant for boiler related issues

  • Lead and perform boiler inspections and populate component assessment documentation

  • Provide technical direction for repairs, upgrades and component replacements

  • Facilitate strategic planning through plant health meetings for boiler maintenance, operation, repair, upgrade and new component installation.

  • Provide technical input to station staff and project managers for capital and O&M budgets

  • Provide technical support for implementation of new technologies

  • Provide technical support for additional balance of plant equipment: high energy piping, coal silos, coal feeders, coal mills, natural gas systems, fuel oil systems, auxiliary steam and soot blowers, bottom ash systems

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic Qualifications - Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

Basic Qualifications - Sr Engineer:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications - Engineer III

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Additional Preferred Qualifications - Senior Engineer

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Boiler maintenance and operational experience

  • Boiler inspection experience

  • Knowledgeable of ASME Section I and B31.1

  • Knowledgeable in thermal performance

  • Knowledgeable in power plant water chemistry

  • Knowledgeable of common boiler construction materials

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

Working Conditions

  • Performs work in an office and power plant environment

  • Required to observe and direct work in all areas of generation facilities which are power plant, utility environments operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity

  • Required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights, enter vessels or equipment with limited access, walk, stoop, lift, bend, crawl and/or squat.

  • Confined space entry qualified

  • Respirator fit qualified

  • May be exposed to high stress situations

  • Required to be available for emergency response as needed

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
