Job Summary:

Come join the College of Letters & Science for an exciting new role as a Contract and External Agreements Manager. You'll have an opportunity to be responsible for corporate contracting and legal agreements, including corporate and industry grant proposal review and approval, and review and approval of non-financial agreements; and technology transfer and equity review. We are looking for an agile and enthusiastic Contract and External Agreements Manager to help L&S. Successful candidates will demonstrate an appreciation of the research activities in areas covered by the College of Letters & Science and an understanding of the mission and priorities of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The incumbent will identify, support, and facilitate collaborative relationships with industry research partners, support and facilitate faculty/staff entrepreneurship, as well as to facilitate the approval of industry-sponsored agreements and collaborations. The incumbent will oversee invention disclosure reporting, work with Research and Sponsored Programs and/or Office of Legal Affairs on behalf of faculty, staff, and students within the College, and coordinate with the IP Specialist in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education to perform equity reviews as needed on the invention disclosure reports submitted by L&S faculty and staff.

As the largest college in the university, L&S is home to 34 academic departments, 10 non-academic departments, 73 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, and 5 professional schools across four broad divisions: arts and humanities, computer, data & information sciences, physical and natural sciences, and the social sciences. The L&S Research Services unit within the L&S Dean's office processes approximately 650 proposals per year with a total value of around $420 million and oversees approximately 1500 existing awards in L&S departments and centers with a total budget value of around $675 million.


Responsibilities:
Manages research administration activities or personnel related to pre-award functions including budget preparation, proposal submission, agreement negotiation, and/or project setup. Develops and oversees implementation of operations and strategic planning to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements within a unit. May manage a programmatic unit and/or personnel.

  • 10% Develops, implements, and evaluates pre-award research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance
  • 25% Works with researchers and prepares budgets, proposal submissions, agreements, or other agreements for sponsor consideration
  • 15% Serves as a key resource to leadership and staff in the unit as well as a liaison to partners and stakeholders
  • 30% May review and negotiate agreements on behalf of the unit
  • 5% Compile reports on the industrial-sponsored research
  • 5% Review and approve all legal agreements on behalf of the Dean including Memoranda of Understanding, Data Use and Data, Sharing Agreements, Confidential Disclosure Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Copyright License Agreements, and others.
  • 5% Represent the college, UW-Madison and its industrial interests at campus wide meetings, national, and regional meetings of corporate contracting interests
  • 5% Oversees invention disclosure reporting and perform equity reviews

Qualifications:

Required:
- 3 years experience in research, sponsored programs, or industry contracting
- Demonstrated experience with drafting, negotiating, or interpreting grants and contracts
- Experience interpreting, applying, and communicating complex policies, procedures, legislation, or administrative rules.
- Knowledge of, or ability to, learn policies and procedures related to pre- and post-award research administration.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and build positive working relationships with researchers and other administrative offices.

Preferred:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience at a research institute or university.
- Knowledge of UW-Madison policies, procedures, and regulations
- Experience with WISER, RAMP, Cayuse, MS Office, and other software systems in use at UW Madison, or similar systems

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $71,994 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $72,000 - $102,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
