Job Summary:

This position is part of the Environmental Health Division at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), located on the east side of Madison (off campus). WSLH serves as the public, environmental, and occupational health laboratory for the state of Wisconsin, and is associated with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. The employee in this position will assist in a project of wastewater-based epidemiology by monitoring wastewater influent for SARS-CoV-2 gene targets as well as other fecal indicators or pathogens from wastewater treatment facilities throughout Wisconsin.

Work on the wastewater surveillance project involves sample processing, including RNA concentration and extraction from wastewater and analyses using PCR. This role requires the employee to aseptically handle water samples following established procedures, enter data & test results using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), perform quality control and assurance, receive samples, assist in sampling logistics, prepare sample kits, and help as needed with research projects. Occasional driving fleet vehicle to pick up samples (usually locally) will be required.


Responsibilities:
Performs testing services within a microbiology laboratory including human, animal, and plant diagnostics, surveillance, screening, environmental monitoring, and forensic science to report clear and concise testing results.

  • 5% Propagates and maintains cell lines and cultures for microorganism isolation or assay procedures
  • 25% Performs, interprets, and reports microbiological tests or assays for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of illnesses or determine sources of contamination in the environment
  • 5% Prepares specimens for scientific examination and analysis and/or prepares the laboratory for accreditation audits/inspections
  • 20% Conducts biological research experiments employing quality control and quality assurance practices and adhering to regulatory standards and requirements
  • 5% Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and information management systems
  • 5% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Communicates with internal and external stakeholders as needed
  • 5% Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and other professional colleagues
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities and other professional development
  • 20% Unpacks and receives samples in preparation for analyses and archiving.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science or related field.


Qualifications:

Relevant work or laboratory experience required.

One year of laboratory experience preferred.

Required:

1) Knowledge and skills of general and standard good laboratory practices.
2) Knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology, including associated laboratory equipment.
3) Knowledge of personal computers and use of scientific laboratory application software, such as spreadsheets, word processing and database operations.
4) Knowledge and practice of QA/QC and laboratory safety.
5) Effective team and interpersonal skills.
6) Ability to work independently after training.
7) Organized, motivated, detail-oriented, excellent communication skills and able to work in a fast-paced work environment.
8) Must obtain and maintain UW driver's authorization.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $49,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications

Minimum salary is $49,000/year. Actual salary is to be determined upon hire and dependent on qualifications.
