Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Environment, Health and Safety (
EHS) department is responsible for all environment, health and safety functions/requirements at the University. In support of the University's core mission,
EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities. By developing
EHS programs and performing various periodic inspections we can provide a safe work place, ensure a process of compliance and minimize future potential liabilities.
EHS is organized into eight (8) sections: Biological Safety, Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety & Emergency Response, Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety and Business & Support. |
Position Summary |
The Industrial Hygiene (IH) Manager is a senior management position responsible for the proactive management of the Occupational and Environmental Hygiene section within Environment, Health & Safety (
EHS). This position is responsible for 2 workgroups: (1) Industrial Hygiene and (2) Energy Services Safety Officer. This group is responsible for ensuring that indoor campus environments are conducive to good health and wellbeing, by recognizing, evaluating, and controlling health and safety hazards, using knowledge and experience in industrial hygiene, asbestos and lead management, air and water quality and safety engineering. This is accomplished through assessment of potential safety hazards, possible instances of exposure, training, and suitability of protective equipment. Their mission is accomplished through partnerships with the campus community and departmental engineering to find ways to keep historical buildings functional, while protecting employee health, and working with planning, construction, and startup of new and renovated buildings to anticipate and eliminate building related health issues. This includes all testing for these programs (hearing conservation, respiratory protection, etc.). This group has duties that encompass all labs on campus and utilities (power plant, steam plant, electric distribution), etc. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
4 year degree plus 2 years or Master's degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Industrial Hygienist Certification (
CHI).
* Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required.
* At least 15 years progressively responsible and closely related experience in Industrial Hygiene and Manufacturing Safety management and reporting.
* A strong background in occupational safety and industrial hygiene.
* Knowledge and experience of
OSHA,
EPA and NC occupational safety regulations is required.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Knowledge of industrial hygiene and environmental engineering.
* Knowledge of containment standards and engineering.
* Demonstrated ability to build a cohesive leadership team.
* Demonstrated program experience in a university or higher education setting.
* Demonstrated strong coalition building and collaboration skills. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
This position requires physical agility (i.e. Stoop, crawl, climb ladders, move/transport heavy equipment, etc.), entry into hazardous environments, use of personal protective equipment, and an element of personal risk during emergency responses. The ability to wear a respirator (cartridge air purifying or open-circuit
SCBA) is essential.
Annual medical clearance is required for Emergency Response Team.
This position is designated as University Emergency, Severe Weather Essential and Communicable Disease Mandatory Onsite - Primary. |
