Summary:

The Yard Supervisor in Akutan Alaska oversees the container yard, dock, and recycling in support of production and supply chain operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise daily operations of the shipping yard, recycling facilities, and incinerator, optimizing workflow and resource utilization.
  • Provide support to the dock crew with vessel support as needed.
  • Manage inventory storage and handling, ensuring continuous production flow and accurate record-keeping using Innova for shipping containers and other inventory.
  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing container shipments with logistics partners, including the delivery of supplies according to departmental protocols.
  • Oversee the shipment of recycled materials, hazardous waste, and hazardous materials, working closely with EH&S to ensure full regulatory compliance.
  • Implement and monitor recycling programs, including the open burn pit for pallets and cardboard (where permitted and compliant), to minimize waste and reduce shipping costs.
  • Ensure all operations comply with relevant regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, Recycle, Dock, and yard area.
  • Enforce safety protocols and foster a strong safety culture within the team.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities, including inventory, incineration, emissions, compliance reports, safety training, and certifications. Ensure all documentation is current and readily accessible.
  • Manage all compliance paperwork and documentation.
  • Ensure all items are handled and stored according to established safety and quality standards.
  • Manage team member performance, including conducting performance reviews and initiating disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and report major maintenance issues to the appropriate department (e.g., truck shop).

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a leadership role
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to coordinate with multiple departments and manage logistics efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using inventory management software, such as Innova or ability to learn inventory management software.
  • Minimum of 2 years with yard operations supervisor experience, as well as experience working in a container yard, shipping and receiving, logistics, or other comparable experience.
  • Ability to meet multiple tasks/projects and deadlines with changing priorities while maintaining a professional attitude.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Proficient in Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate in arts degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift Certification and have experience with top pick operations.

Physical Demands: This job requires regular standing, walking, using hands, and reaching. Occasionally, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling is needed. Communication is essential, requiring talking and hearing. The employee must frequently lift/move up to 10 lbs, often up to 25 lbs, and occasionally up to 50 lbs. Vision requirements include distance, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The role also involves being on-call, long shifts or 24/7 availability during certain seasons, night shifts, and travel.

Mental Activities: While performing this job, the employee will frequently utilize decision-making, teamwork, training, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in speaking and understanding English is required. Occasionally, the employee will need to apply training skills.

Work Environment: This job involves frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, harsh weather conditions including extreme cold and wet/humid environments.It also occasionally exposes the employee to high, precarious positions, fumes, toxic chemicals, the risk of electrical shock and vibration, with a generally loud noise level.
