Position Summary
The Research Technician will support the ongoing experimental processes in a fast-paced HIV laboratory. Work requires knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques, and terminology. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to, conducting experiments, collecting data, and analyzing data. Our lab focuses on HIV latency and performs a mix of basic science and translational clinical research.

The Institute of Global Health and Infectious and Division of Infectious Disease develop ongoing clinical, educational, and research programs directed toward preventing and treating infectious diseases. The Institute and Division's goals include coordinating and conducting basic and applied research in infectious diseases and fostering collaboration among other investigators and researchers; improving clinical care in infectious diseases, including activities related to the management of HIV and other communicable diseases; activities related to emerging pathogens, international health, and clinical outreach and contagious disease prevention activities, including a focus on vaccine development and vaccination practices.

The UNC HIV Cure Center ( HCC) is a consortium of HIV researchers aiming to define the mechanisms of HIV persistence and progress drug development toward a cure for HIV. With approximately 10,000 square feet of physical lab space, members are centrally located on the UNC campus and have shared access to state-of-the-art equipment. The UNC HIV Cure Center, directed by Dr. David Margolis, promotes collaborative research efforts among the different laboratories and is focused on discovering, developing, and implementing new treatments to allow durable treatment-free remission of HIV infection (cure).

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Prefer candidates with nucleic acid isolation experience and extensive experience in PCR assay set up and analysis.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory practices for work under BSL-2 conditions.
  • Prior knowledge of isolation and culture of primary cells and sample preparation experience for flow cytometry.
  • Employee must be reliable, honest and trustworthy; have the ability to work flexible hours as a team player; be highly organized, attentive and communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in written form. The person must possess extreme attention to details.
  • The person must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision; have knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, techniques and terminology; and be able to learn/use multiple computer software platforms.
  • The employee must be able to analyze data digitally and manually and clearly communicate those results. The employee should possess mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents and supplies
